ETIAS is coming for European Travel

🌍 Europe’s New ETIAS: What Every Traveler Should Know

Starting in late 2026, travelers from visa-exempt countries will need a new online travel authorization before visiting most of Europe’s Schengen Area and a few other EU nations. Think of it as Europe’s version of the U.S. ESTA — a quick digital pre-check that happens before you book your flight or step foot on the continent.

✈️ What Is ETIAS?

ETIAS stands for European Travel Information and Authorisation System. It’s a digital travel authorization designed to improve border security while helping keep travel smooth and streamlined for the majority of visitors who pose no risk.

Unlike a traditional visa, ETIAS isn’t a stiff bureaucratic process — it’s a short online application that most people can complete in minutes. Once approved, it’s valid for up to three years (or until your passport expires) and allows multiple short trips to Europe.

🗓️ Timeline: When Does It Start?

The system isn’t live yet — as of October 2025 no applications are being accepted. The official launch is planned for the last quarter of 2026.

Here’s how things are expected to unfold:

  • Phase-in period: After launch, there may be a transitional period (several months) where travelers are encouraged to apply, but won’t be blocked at the border if they lack ETIAS — as long as they meet the usual entry requirements.

  • Mandatory enforcement: Full enforcement is expected sometime in 2027, after airlines, ferry companies and other carriers update systems to check ETIAS before boarding.

Until then, you can still travel visa-free as you do now — and there’s no need to rush to apply yet.

🛂 Who Needs ETIAS?

If you’re from a country that currently enjoys visa-free travel to Europe (like the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, the UK, and many others), you’ll need ETIAS for short stays (tourism, business, transit) of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. It applies to around 1.4 billion travelers worldwide.

It does not replace long-stay visas — if you’re planning to study, work, or live in Europe, you’ll still need the appropriate visa for those purposes.

🧾 How to Apply

Once ETIAS goes live, the process will be straightforward:

  1. Online application: Fill out a form on the official ETIAS website or app before you travel.

  2. Basic information: Provide passport details, personal info, and answer security-related questions.

  3. Pay the fee: A fee of €20 has been set (about US$20-$22), though some travelers (like those under 18 or over 70) may be exempt from paying.

  4. Authorization: Most approvals will be almost instant, and the authorization will be linked digitally to your passport.

Since this is an online process — no embassy visits, no interviews — many travelers will find it simple to complete.

🔐 Why ETIAS Is Being Introduced

Europe’s version of pre-travel authorization is all about:

  • Stronger border security before arrival.

  • Faster checks at border crossings.

  • Harmonized risk assessment across EU and Schengen countries.

This system aims to identify risks early, which can help reduce delays and last-minute refusals at the airport or land borders — especially useful given how busy Europe’s travel hubs have become.

📌 Tips for Travelers

  • Plan ahead: Even though most approvals are fast, it’s wise to apply well before your trip to avoid issues.

  • Use official sources: Beware of third-party websites charging extra fees or harvesting your data — only apply through the official ETIAS portal.

  • Check your passport: ETIAS will be linked to your passport, so ensure it has long enough validity for your travel and the authorization period.

🚀 Final Thoughts

ETIAS marks a major shift in how Europe manages its borders — but for most travelers, it simply adds one quick online step to what has long been visa-free travel. Think of it as a way to keep trips safe, secure, and hassle-free — with plenty of time to prepare before it becomes a travel must-have in 2027

Tauck Bridges-- the best solution for multi-generational travel

Bella Italia, Made Effortless: Our Tauck Bridges Family Experience

Last summer, my family and I experienced Italy in a way that felt both deeply immersive and remarkably effortless—no small feat when traveling with three generations. Our group included family members in their 70s and 30s, as well as children as young as 11, and we all traveled together on Tauck Bridges’ Bella Italia journey.

It quickly became clear that this wasn’t a typical family tour. Tauck Bridges doesn’t just “work around” different ages—it designs for them, creating an experience that feels balanced, enriching, and genuinely enjoyable for everyone.

Italy Through a Multigenerational Lens

Bella Italia strikes a rare balance: iconic destinations paired with hands-on experiences that engage younger travelers, while still offering the cultural depth and pacing that adults—and grandparents—appreciate.

In Rome, ancient history felt vivid and accessible rather than overwhelming. In Florence, art became interactive and approachable. And in Venice, the city itself became part of the experience—easy to navigate, endlessly fascinating, and thoughtfully paced for travelers of all ages.

What stood out most was how naturally Tauck wove education and engagement into the journey. The children were curious, involved, and excited—never bored or over-scheduled—while adults could fully appreciate the history, cuisine, and atmosphere without feeling rushed.

The Luxury of Not Having to Think

For a group spanning multiple generations, the greatest luxury was ease.

Skip-the-line access, seamless transportation, centrally located hotels, and expert local guides meant we spent our time enjoying Italy—not coordinating logistics or managing fatigue. The itinerary flowed smoothly, with built-in flexibility that worked equally well for grandparents and pre-teens.

Tauck’s behind-the-scenes access—often unavailable to independent travelers—added an extra layer of exclusivity, while thoughtful meal planning ensured authentic Italian dining that was both refined and family-friendly.

The Tauck Difference: Thoughtful Surprises

One of the most memorable elements of the Bella Italia journey was something Tauck is particularly known for: surprises.

These are experiences not listed in advance—designed to delight and elevate the trip in unexpected ways. On our journey, those surprises included a complimentary visit to the Colosseum, a private nighttime viewing of the Sistine Chapel with fewer than 30 guests, and an unforgettable ride through Florence in classic Fiat cars.

Each of these moments felt exclusive, seamless, and genuinely special—experiences that would be difficult, if not impossible, to arrange independently, especially for a multigenerational group. For the children, they were thrilling. For the adults, they were unforgettable. And for everyone, they became the stories we still talk about.

Why Tauck Bridges Works So Well for Families

What truly sets Tauck Bridges apart is its understanding of family dynamics—especially multigenerational ones. Children traveled with peers and quickly formed friendships. Adults enjoyed meaningful cultural experiences. And older family members appreciated the pacing, comfort, and attentive support throughout the journey.

Everyone felt included. No one felt like they were compromising.

The result was a trip that felt enriching rather than exhausting, and memorable across generations.

A Trip That Stays With You

Bella Italia wasn’t just a vacation—it was a shared family experience that continues to come up in conversation months later, across ages and perspectives. That, to me, is the mark of exceptional travel.

For families seeking a refined, meaningful way to explore Italy together—whether traveling with children, grandparents, or both—Tauck Bridges’ Bella Italia offers a beautifully balanced solution—complete with the kind of moments you never see coming, but never forget.

Bonvoy Silver Status Instantly

Get Bonvoy Silver Status instantly

If you have a Marriott Bonvoy account, but don’t have any status, then I’ve got something for you.

Fill out this form for Bonvoy Silver Status

My friends at Marriott’s luxury department are letting some of their STAR and Luminous agents give out Bonvoy Silver status to their clients.   Now, that isn’t a huge deal, maybe it might land you a slightly better room or help with a late check out, and make it faster to go up in level.   However at all of the really nice Marriott owned properties. Remember, i get STAR and Luminous benefits, and those can help a lot. Together, higher Bonvoy tiers with a STAR/Luminous rate makes upgrades pretty likely.   While there are some of the nicer brands with Luminous, nearly all of the top Luxury brands (below) have STAR rates. (that includes the new Yacht line)

Tauck

I have an aunt who has never been to Europe.

Ever since I was a small child, she was always one of my absolute favorite family members.  She worked very, very hard her whole life.   I come from a family of hard workers and my aunt is a prime example, she worked so hard, she didn’t get to travel too much.  Her beloved husband passed away several years ago and she wanted to go Italy, she dreamt of it her whole life, she didn’t want to go alone.

I thought about that a lot.  She’s never flown overseas, so I didn’t want to make a very long trip.  She’s quite physically capable, but a small person, and I didn’t want her to lug her baggage from spot to spot. Also, being that this will likely be her only time in Italy.  I wanted it to be AMAZING, I wanted her socks knocked off.  She also asked me and my family to go!  The more I thought about it, there  was one clear best answer.

Tauck.  Or Specifically, a Tauck Family Bridges trip.  It’s a trip designed for three generations, Grandparents, Parents and Kids.  My mom also decided to come.  Believe me, in Europe, a family of five isn’t the easiest thing to book, a trip designed from the ground up was just perfect.  The fact that 2025 is their 100th anniversary and they are having some great deals, didn’t hurt.

Tauck is one of the best, the awards speak for themselves.  I’ve never had somebody have a bad Tauck Trip.  Whether it’s river cruising, safari or overland, like we are doing.  It’s always amazing.  They are functionally excellent, they pick nice places and do all the best stuff, but they always stand out.

However, that’s not what really makes Tauck stand out.  It’s the stuff they can’t really tell you about ahead of time.

For example take this little video:  It flashes by the Ferragamo Museum in Florence, lots of people do that, Tauck has it with the member of the Ferragamo family. The concert?  That isn’t in a music hall, it’s in a legit Tuscan estate.  You may have had Lungarotti Wine, but some folks on a Tauck trip got to taste the wine, and learn about it, from Chiara Lungarotti herself.  Ever walk into an empty Sistine Chapel?  Not many people have, but not a few Tauck travelers who have traveled to Rome have heard the echo off of Michelangelo’s famous frescos.   Tauck can’t advertise these things, because they vary tour to tour, day to day, but there are always special touches and that is truly one thing that raises them up.

Tauck Memorable Moments | Florence to Rome

Want to Travel with a history expert?  What about Ken Burns?   Like Trains? Pick a continent. Love the Tournament of Roses?  Get up close and personal  Safaris, Fall Foliage, National Parks, Small Ship cruising partnered with several of the best small cruise lines in the world and of course their own heavily awarded river cruise line.  The Biggest reason I don’t advocate those to my clients is because of how far in advance those cruises sell out!  Which is also true for their Small Group Journeys.

I’m taking my mom, my aunt, my wife and my daughter.  I wanted a trip to Italy to be as perfect as possible, so… Tauck it was.

Saving Money by Flying More

Sometimes more flying can mean less money, even in business class

Saving Money by Flying More

In the peculiar world of airline pricing, sometimes flying more can actually cost less. You’ve probably seen those low fares with multiple connections that seem less convenient. While nonstop flights are in high demand, connecting flights can be easier to book, and sometimes, by manipulating stopover rules, you can actually save money. Here’s how to use this to your advantage.

Scenario 1: Chicago to Dubai with a Bonus in the Maldives

Imagine you want to fly business class to Dubai and experience Emirates Business Class. You check flights from Chicago and see that the cost is around $6,800 per person in business class. However, if you add a long weekend in the Maldives, the price drops to $5,625. That’s quite the saving, and you get to enjoy an over-the-water bungalow!

Scenario 2: Denver to Tokyo with a Stop in Saigon

Next, let’s say you want to fly nonstop from Denver to Tokyo on United in Polaris class. The cost is $8,135. But if you add a long weekend in Saigon, where you can indulge in Bahn Mi and Pho, the price drops to $6,274. Not only do you save money, but you also get to explore another destination! It also will let you try out ANA’s business class.

Scenario 3: Los Angeles to Peru with a Hidden Savings

Finally, consider a trip to Peru, with most travelers heading to Machu Picchu, which means flying to Cuzco. While there’s no business class within Peru, LATAM offers Cabina Premium and while they don’t have the best business class international, it’s not the worst either. . If you separate out the cost of that ticket, you’ll see a modest savings a few hundred bucks. But the real benefits are that the baggage allowance from the long-haul business class flights extends to your entire itinerary and that your contract of carriage between you and the airline represents your whole trip, not just a part of it.  For example, if the Cuzco-Lima Leg is delayed and you miss the flight to LA, it’s on the airline to get you accommodated.  If it’s two tickets, you may be screwed.  What if there was civil unrest in Cuzco (like there was in January 2023?  If flights cancelled in and out of Cuzco, then you could cancel your whole ticket for a refund, instead of just part of it.   There are reasons to separate tickets sometimes, but generally more flights on less tickets is better.

Those are just some examples.  You never really know where you’ll find value like this on flights until you look.

Below flights are all business class with the exception of the LaTam flight within Peru, it’s the closest that aircraft can come to business class. Premium Economy.

Travel Photography

Take a picture it will last longer! The wonderful gift of travel photography

I promise this is leading to travel photography—just trust me.

Have you ever met someone who is ridiculously talented? The kind of person who seems to excel at everything they try?

No? Well, let me introduce you to my wife.

She loves music, so naturally, she sings and plays guitar. She enjoys warm socks and sweaters, which is why she’s an extremely accomplished knitter. She’s also a skilled seamstress who makes clothes so well that you’d only know they’re handmade by the small, custom tags she sews in. Beyond that, she’s a math whiz, a spreadsheet ninja, and a controller for a notable education nonprofit. And on top of all that, she’s an amazing wife, mother, and best friend.

I could go on all day, but this is about her photography.

Her side gig? Photography. While she mainly does family portraits, she also has a passion for travel photography, which is part of why I’m so fortunate to be with someone as talented, smart, and beautiful as she is. Here’s a blog post she wrote on travel photography a few years ago, and below are some photos from our most recent trip. People have wondered why “My” travel photos look professionally done, well, that’s because they are.

If you want her to photograph your family, don’t wait—she books up fast and might even raise her rates soon.

Even though I know how talented she is, I’m still blown away every time we get home and see her photos.

Saving big on a Luxury hotel

Sometimes knowing the right place to go to look for the best deal can pay off big

This was originally just going to be about the hotel aspect, but something came up on the flight side that’s worth sharing too. I will point out that this is a package. I don’t really know where the savings are. I can make some deductions based on different what I see. I”m pretty sure the first one was hotel based and the second flight based. I will point out that both hotels in both circumstances ARE luxury hotels.

Let me be clear: package deals aren’t always cheaper (even though package companies would love for you to think otherwise). Often, they aren’t. The only way to know for sure is to do your homework and explore all the options. That said, sometimes packages can offer incredible savings.

Here are two real examples:

  1. A trip to Hawaii with 7 nights at the Grand Hyatt in one of their top-tier club access rooms, plus nonstop flights with economy plus seating on United, was $1,200 less than booking the hotel alone directly. The total savings? About $3,800.

  2. Nonstop business class flights and 3 nights at the Hotel Bel Ami in Paris for about $5,000 less than the airfare alone. The overall savings? Around $7,000.

If you just want to take my word for it, you can take my word for it, but if you want PROOF… keep reading.

I think it’s easier to show these things. I’ll do that with images and if a downloadable PDF. (mostly because I can’t get a picture of it to format well here)

First we have the Grand Hyatt Kauai, this is my “Prive’” rate, full breakfast included each day, chances of upgrade VIP status.

For the King room with Club Access (not the ‘accessible king room”) $11,803.04.

United $953 and this is the nonstop, so two tickets was $1906.

Wow, I didn’t realize UA.com makes you buy a ticket to see how much economy plus seating costs. I have to go to my system, I can look without buying one. I figured $160, per seat, per direction, some are higher, some are lower, but $640 round trip was the number I used to calculate value a total cost of $14400. If booked it, $14550. Because I would charge $75 per ticket for United (but not for the Hyatt, it is a commissionable item, I don’t charge fees on commissionable items.)

Total cost on the Package, $10627. They actually will end up paying $11,197, because the opted for a $599 cancel for any reason insurance. If the night before their flight, they just feel like they don’t want to go to Hawaii now, they get back the full $10,627 for any reason on their credit card. NOT CREDIT, the money back.

I couldn’t figure out how to take a picture this big so this is a copy of their booking with all personal info redacted.

Next example, Luxury in Paris

Nonstop flights to/from Paris from Denver, business class, Nearly $17K for two.

Or with Google Flights That link should work for a little bit…

And the hotel Bel Ami, cheapest room $2137.00 for 3 nights. All and all, just over $19K.

Package Pricing for all of that.$12,108.97 Again, I have to use a heavily Redacted PDF

Tips on using travel insurance well.

Personally, I always get travel insurance. While I might spend less on it than others, this post isn’t about purchasing travel insurance; it’s about using it. These tips apply to any situation where you might need to file a claim.

Personally, I always get travel insurance. While I might spend less on it than others, this post isn’t about purchasing travel insurance; it’s about using it. These tips apply to any situation where you might need to file a claim.

Buying travel insurance can be complicated, but using it doesn’t have to be. It’s simple if not always easy.

Here’s how to ensure you get the most out of your policy:

1. Understand Your Policy

Before you need to use your travel insurance, familiarize yourself with the policy details. Review the long-form “definition of coverage”—this is the fine print. Does the policy include medical coverage? If so, how much? Is there coverage for travel delays? If so, how long must the delay be before the coverage kicks in?

One of the most important things to check for is exceptions. If the reason you purchased the insurance isn’t covered, you may be out of luck. Policies often have different coverage periods, so what’s unpayable on one plan may be covered by another. If you have specific concerns, make sure your plan addresses them.

2. Contact the Insurance Company Immediately

As soon as an issue arises, contact your insurance company. In fact, I sometimes call even before something happens to ensure I’m prepared for the next critical step. Document the date, time, and name of the person you spoke with—just in case you’re given incorrect information.

3. Documentation is Key

Insurance claims hinge on proper documentation. As soon as you can, contact the insurance company (collect calls usually work) and ask, “What documentation do I need for a payable claim?” Keep a record of the contact phone number and your policy number.

4. Obtain Documentation Quickly

Gather the necessary documentation as soon as possible. Trying to get paperwork after leaving the airport, train station, police station, or doctor’s office is much harder and often impossible. Insurance companies won’t take your word for it—you need the right paperwork.

5. Submit the Claim

Once you have all the documentation and receipts, submit your claim. Then, wait for the check to arrive and cash it!

Some insight on how trip to Asia turned into a trip around the world.

(a brief exploration on the sometimes bizarre world of airline ticket pricing)

I love traveling with my family. This year, the girls wanted to go to Asia. If you follow these blogs, you know that for the last few years, one of my biggest travel snits has been the crushing cost of transpacific airfare. I’ve noticed how much of that seems to be directly targeting the American market. This isn’t just about cost; it’s also about flexibility. That's how I was able to get a Toronto-Paris-Singapore-Bali fare with multiple days in Paris and Singapore on just one plane ticket (a fare set in Canadian dollars) and a fare from Kuala Lumpur to Tokyo (multiple days in Tokyo) and then onto Chicago (a fare set in Malaysian ringgits) for less than just a round trip to Bali from Denver, even with the connector flights to Toronto and the flights in Malaysia added into the mix.

Sitting here at Singapore Airport, having had a great time here, in Paris, and on a side trip to Niagara Falls, I decided to pop in some business class flight comparisons. I picked these at random:

All business class:

  • Denver to Tokyo (nonstop R/T): $6,632 (the lowest I’ve seen this, by the way)

  • Vancouver to Tokyo (nonstop R/T): $3,829.51

  • Denver to Sydney: $9,728 (with a stop R/T)

  • Vancouver to Sydney: $6,127 (nonstop R/T)

For many years, I would say that it’s fairly hard to find a decently priced one-way ticket out of the United States, but it’s really hard to find a decently priced one-way ticket to the United States. But… that hasn’t been true either. It seems that the airlines' drive to squeeze the American traveler for every penny they can has finally overcome a long-standing truism in international travel.

  • Denver to Singapore: $4,378.80 (and I had to do the first leg in economy for that price)

  • Singapore to Denver: $3,576 (all business class). I’ll also point out that United really seems bent on driving Denver tickets to Singapore as high as possible, and fares won’t go too far below $11K with just one stop in SFO; just the SFO-Singapore R/T is under $5K.

These examples were all taken at random, but they provide a clue as to how a trip to Bali for my family and me turned into an around-the-world journey.

I have to say, right now, I’m not sorry about it at all.  Four countries down, two more to go.
