Dads and Going Places

(a father’s day reflection on Dads and Travel)

When I was 10 years old, my dad took my sister and me on an epic road trip. As parents, we never know what the impact will be of the experiences we give our children. Sometimes, those experiences are completely lost to childhood memory. Sometimes, those experiences can shape the very course of their lives. I’ve often thought about that road trip from the Western USA to the East Coast, from Florida to Maine. I think that without that trip, I may not have ever found the love of travel I have now. It was one of those life-shaping events. My dad scored a win. He aimed for one of those huge memories for his kids, and he did it. Dad, if you read this: thank you. I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating–thank you.

I don’t know if it’s just me, but I try hard with those big efforts for my daughter. My wife, day to day, moment to moment, is clearly the better parent. Crafting, baking, parent-teacher conferences, even just paying better attention and being present, Mom wins. It’s not by chance either–it seems to be a combination of sincere effort and prodigious natural skill. I do try hard as a father—it's very important—but when I see a chance for a big win, I take it. Of course, I do have an edge with the family vacation, which seems to be important to fathers everywhere. Maybe it’s just movies like “The Great Outdoors,” “Vacation,” and “Little Miss Sunshine.” It does seem like dads, in particular, seize the opportunity to create something truly special for their families by going somewhere special. My professional experience also speaks to this tendency.

Right now, I am with my daughter in a luxury ‘glamping’ tent not too far from West Bali National Park. Her mom is at the infinity pool, and the kid and I are taking a little break. The past week has seen four countries, close to 20,000 miles, and many good times. I sincerely hope that this around-the-world trip does something powerful for her the way that epic road trip did something powerful for me.

So, this Father’s Day, if your dad ever took you somewhere and gave you a vacation you never forgot, thank him for it. Chances are, he took you hoping in his heart it would be the kind of thing you would always remember. “Happy Father’s Day” goes a long way, but a “Happy Father’s day,”  that is preceded by a “remember when you took me to [fill in blank]? That was something I always remembered, thanks for doing that with me.”—well, I think that might just go a little further.

PS. I just read this a second time and realize I have another thank you headed out to my Dad. He actually took me a lot of places. There are six, well, five of us now. He’s orchestrated trips for the whole family at large expense and effort on his part. So I also have an ethic about sharing travel with family I also owe to him. So Dad, thanks for that too. Oh, and thanks one last time for exposing me so much to the world of Luxury hotels as a kid. Who knew I’d end up being a professional about that? At the time, it was just about the great pool and amazing breakfast buffet.

PPS. I am so spoiled about breakfast buffets I seriously do not think it qualifies as “brunch” if there isn’t at least one manned station serving omelettes, crepes or what have you. Thanks for that too, Dad.

Kid you’re gonna love this.

(A Father’s travel tale on not giving up on making a memorable experience Memorable)

I was a beach kid.  I grew up mostly in San Diego and the ocean has always been a big part of my life. I’d also like to get back into Scuba diving more seriously.  I’ve only gone diving once in the past few years.  Despite years and years of being a bonafide single traveler, I now have a vast preference for traveling with my family.  So, I’ve started a plan on getting them PADI Certified.  

The Gateway activity for scuba diving is, of course, snorkeling.  So a few years ago I took them to St Maarten and Anguilla.  There was a heavy swell on our full excursion day and the snorkling was ok, not amazing.  Kid was just 7 and the ocean was scary.  Snorkeling didn’t quite take the way I wanted it too.  Then, we went to Aruba and my wife and daughter snorkeled watching our bubble trails come up.  My daughter liked it, but it also was not quite the magical experience I was hoping for.  

Then came Bali, or more specifically Menjangan Island along one of the most beautiful reefs I’ve ever seen and kid came alive.  I had to keep tugging her back into following the snorkel guide as she kept racing off to chase fish.  There were so many beautiful fish.  She gave bubbly exclamations and laughter, pointing to another new beautiful living thing under the ocean.  It was FANTASTIC. Not only did I finally share something with her that I always wanted to, she.. really LOVED it."

I suppose that the lesson here is, if you are traveling and expending serious time and resources in the attempt to share something wonderful with your kids, don’t give up. For my family, with the underwater ocean activities, I was starting to think that I just had to let that one go.  As it is now, Kid is asking to be scuba certified as soon as possible, I expect that will start this year (she's 10 now) and hopefully by 12, will have full open water.

Stacking Cruise Bennies with Virtuoso and American Express

A colleague  turned me onto this for Centurion and Platinum Amex users.  It’s really sweet, as a Virtuoso member I tend to get extra bennies for my clients just as is, having a way to stack even more on.  At least one of the cruises on here I know will stack up with over $600 of shipboard credit onboard and $250 in spa vouchers.

One of the coolest things about going independent is that I am not alone.  The Travel Society has nearly 150 members who are all rocking travel agents.   Some of us, like myself, have very traditional backgrounds.  I have worked in large travel agencies (first student ones, then corporate leisure departments)

However, some of my colleagues are in quite nontraditionally and one I’m very close to the guy  who told me about this one.  He takes on clients who are very, very wealthy who end up with a ridiculous amount of credit card points.  So much so, they hire an expert to handle those points for him.  He’s the expert So, My colleague is the best of the best at working the credit card points racket (really, any kind of awards, Frequent flyer, freaking starbucks, if it’s a workable bennie, he knows how to work it)

Why I can book that luxury hotel better than just about anyone.

I picked Paris for this Blog because the existence of the “Palace” rating system allows me to demonstrate something more clearly than I could in a lot of other destinations. However, this is also true in many other destinations. That’s simply how I’m one of the best connected people in the business.


So as most of you know I am a Virtuoso agent.  Virtuoso does represent the Crème de la crème of travel professionals.  However, comparatively few of them have as many partnerships as I do.

Of the current 12 “Palace” hotels in Paris, I have Virtuoso VIP perks with 10 of them.   However, with 10 of those, I also have VIP perks through that hotel inhouse program which are usually much harder to get into.  When I’m asking for good treatment, such as early/late check out, upgrades, etc, which program do I use?  Both, I sometimes book Virtuoso, sometimes the inhouse VIP rate, but I always reference my status as being part of both programs.

Value in booking international air 3: Different Cabins in Different directions

In my third installment of Higher Value on International Flights, I have something that I do for people often, especially for Europe. Doing different cabins by direction. In my last blog on this, mixing cabins on the same direction is just a trick to keep flights from going up. This, instead, actually reduces cost.

Flying to Europe with lay-flat seats is a game-changer. Jet lag is reduced, you don’t start that first day completely exhausted, and it’s just a great way to start a trip. For Americans going to Europe, it's an overnight journey, and everyone agrees that having a bed in the sky is a wonderful way to start a trip and worth paying extra for.

On the way back, the value is more debatable. A flight back from Europe feels like a very, very long day, and most people don’t tend to sleep as much. We also often plan a little time at home where we can relax and get our feet back underneath us.

First example: A good fare to London, nonstop from Denver, is $4314 for business class (Polaris) round trip. If we do that in Premium Economy (Premium Plus), the overall cost drops by close to $1000.00. If you haven’t flown premium plus, it's as nice or nicer than United Domestic First class (same or more legroom, a little narrower, but with more options on the bigger plane).

Next!

Air France, into Paris and back from Nice. Business class the whole way costs $4031, returning in premium Economy saves over $850.

One more, and let’s get a little more specific.

Say you want to go to Sicily, and you have a lot of United Mileage Plus points. You’ve got Status! . You look and see airfare on Lufthansa for $4796! (yay!_, and you look at the best you can get on United (016 ticket stock for accrual rules), because you fly alot and know that often the carriers are matched, ….

But not this time. This time United $6308. So(boo!) , we look at a Premium Economy option, and our fare is $3758.50! AND so long as we have a United flight number in at least one direction, we can put it in as a 016 (united ticket) as opposed to a 220 ticket.

This is important because the Cheapie Lufthansa ticket is a “P” fare, a “Deep Discount economy which we can see from United Mileage accrual with Lufthansa will also accrue half of the mileage as a more expensive business class fare. United Lufthansa mileage accrual. So not only are you saving at least $1000 ( and more than double that if you really wanted United Miles to be fully accrued) but you are also getting more miles (Likely, depending on your status)

Star Alliance/One World fare war

This made me send out a my newsletter early. I have not seen business class summertime airfares this low since summer.

For some I brought back the returns in Premium Economy like my third Adding Value to international airfares, but not all, it’s a great trick, but it doesn’t work every time.

All of these are one stop from Denver. What’s amazing here are how small some of these spots are and how normally difficult to get to they are. I didn’t look too hard, these are almost at random, (my random isn’t that random, but still)

Few are above 4K, Some of the ones with Premium Economy returns are below $3k.

Is that Rail Pass worth it?

Many people purchase a rail pass, assuming it will save them money.

But friends, you know me; I don't believe in assumptions, especially not in travel.

The only way to truly know if they are a value is to do the work. Price a trip point to point, then compare that to the cost of a rail pass and what it may cost to use it. I haven't had the price tip in favor of a rail pass in some time, except in Japan. However, even in Japan, most folks who do the regular tourist route also waste money on a pass.

So here is an example of how to get an idea of if a rail pass might be worth it.

I do feel like I should point out that a rail pass can be a huge value. I was a huge proponent of them for years and even now, to this day, if there is a lot of travel on the ground, I’ll still look at them. I did have a client not that long ago actually have a circumstance where they saved a lot of money, but it’s getting unsual.

This was an email to a long time client and I decided to turn it into a blog. She’s been loyal for years and for as long as I’ve known her, has introduced new people to Italy nearly every year. She’s after my own heart, she’s thrifty, sure, but she adores sharing travel with people and so… I work a little harder in her case.

The short answer is that a rail pass probably isn't worth it.

You mentioned getting to Puglia and that by rail, this trip is arduous (this will improve by 2027, and I suspect Puglia will get as popular as Tuscany/Amalfi). However, it is instructive because it's long and likely to be as expensive as you can get..

We can see that an Italy pass for a Senior, Youth, and Adult is $507.50, and a ticket with a reservation is $58, or $174 total. So that might let one think that possibly with enough long trips in Italy, perhaps the Italian Rail Pass might be worth it.. maybe? Or not.

Not here. High-Speed trains require reservations, even if you have a pass, so reservations on those same trains cost for those same trains and the same 3 people... $86.40. So that $507.50 is really closer to $600, and we haven't even started putting in other reservation costs. This is their cheapest pass too, only designed to give you 3 rail days.

Then the X Factor. Ryan Air can fly (with a bag and seat assignment) for $84 a person on one day (other days it's more), but how much is it worth to take out that long arduous rail journey, especially, because given your goals possibly Matera, Ostiuni, and getting back to Genoa, you'll likely have to go back the same direction.

And as for the night train... Well, shucks. It hasn't really been a thing all the way to the UK for some time, but I just found out that the old reliable Thello Night train stopped 3 years ago.... Huh.

Well, I was about to shoot that one down pretty hard too. The cheapest pass is $807 for 3 people, but of course, it doesn't include the couchette/cabins, which are extra so even on those, the passes haven't been helpful for some time.

And I learned something, while getting to London may not be available on its night trains, Trenitalia has started a service called Intercity Notte. The Trenitalia website appeared to give a lower price, but that is ONE VEXING WEBSITE. I couldn't get to the payment page. But another website had 3 adults at $357, which may not be the worst option by price with accommodations involved. I don't know how nice it is, and the overnight is a little short, but I looked at some other maps, and there may be better routes. I'd look at it.

Going by train, point to point, Genoa to Nice on the slow train, Nice to Paris, and then Paris to London really isn't that bad. I broke it (In March) into 3 trips, the first for 3 hours 15 minutes (Genoa-Nice) (Slow, faster to drive, but a pretty coastal route), Nice-Paris (5 hours 33 minutes-fast), and London Paris (2 hours 18 minutes). Ryan Air can turn that into 2 hours and 20 minutes and $240. And of course, it's really more like 6-7 hours with time at the airport, from the airport (especially Stansted), but I priced with a seat and bag.

In short, it's extremely difficult to see any situation where a rail pass would be useful. Even in cases where the overall price was close, the reservation fees killed it. From a time perspective, we were able to find a cheap flight option that saved a lot of time.

Remember a few things.

1. Trains usually can only be booked 30-90 days out.

2. For the best pricing on high-speed trains, book them as soon as they are available (They sell like aircraft).

3. Don't forget to factor getting to/from airports (the specific airports) in both time and cost.

4. And if you do take a train through Paris, you have to usually change stations in Paris with either a long walk or a short metro ride (in this case Gare de Lyon to Gare du Nord.)

Value in booking international air 2: Mixing Cabins

In My first volume, I talked about how I can sometimes lower cost on premium flights by mixing/matching carriers.  This time I’m going to bring up how I can sometimes do this my mixing/matching *cabins”

I just got called for South Africa.  Into Johannesburg on April 6th and back from Capetown on April 20th.  This is a looong flight and the client wants to keep it to one connection and keep those connections relatively short.  I’ve put constraints into Google flights for business class, one stop and travel time less than 23 hours.   We get a very high (even for this route) rate of over $12k.  Below that You can see this rate for this particular route with times on United.Com

Below that, you can see how I was able to nearly half that price by downgrading the flights within the USA to Economy Plus. First lets look at the fare on United.com. This is for one stop with the shortest overall travel time.

Now let’s look at it as I do.

first you must know that for United, business class is P, Z, D, C and J.  (In order of price, usually) and Economy is generally Y and Below, but “B” B is economy plus (not to be confused with premium plus).   When we dissect the rules, we find that the second cheapest fare requires  “Z” space to be on the international leg, but ‘within the USA’ we can utilize B.   If the flights are looked at together, only a “C” fare is available (which is how we get to over $12K) if looked at separately, Z and B are available.   The 4-5 hour flight to/from Newark will only have extra leg room, but the 14-16 hour flights to/from South Africa will be in Lay Flat “Polaris class”. 

We are going to Book B Class on the short flights (Economy Plus) for the Layflats on the long flights (Z)

First, let’s find the fare we want (the ultra low “P fare” is possible, but the schedule demanded for it is heinous)

So, We are going for the lowest “Z” fare.

We can see here that within the USA “B” Economy Plus and “R” space (premium plus, which isn’t often available on flights within the USA.

If we look at the space with the flights togoether, only C space is available, which is how United (and Google) came up with that $12K+ fare.

But Separately B and Z space is available (so is P, but for P, you can only use P it is not “combinable”.)

Many people don’t care so much about the cushy seat on the short haul, but South Africa is a LONG flight. Many people want to cut the overall travel time as much as possible and ensure their comfort on those brutally long flights across the Atlantic to the Southern Hemisphere.

In this case, I nearly cut the airfare in Half. $12,025 is now down to $6524.30.
Having that first flight in first IS nice, but is it' worth $2500 per direction? Not for most.

Value with adventure and Originality in Travel

Have you noticed the prices of hotels around the world? I have.

Many of you may have noticed that hotel prices are on the rise. However, it's worth noting that the increase is not uniform. Greater Values still exist for the adventurous and original. In heavily traveled destinations, prices are soaring, but comparable quality can often be found if one is willing to be a bit more exotic or view established spots with a fresh perspective. All the examples I provide are of exceptional quality. However, in these comparisons, I've aimed to match the quality of each pair of properties. I selected the same dates for all but the last one, where I chose their peak seasons, which are vastly different.

Four Seasons, England:

• The Four Seasons Park Lane in London, during summer, starts at $1400 per night.

• 50 miles away, the Four Seasons Hampshire is $580 a night.

Rocco Forte, Belgium, and Rome:

• The beautiful Rocco Forte De Russie in Rome is $1969 per night.

• The similarly high-quality and beautiful Rocco Forte Amigo in Brussels is $581 per night.

French Boutiques, Paris, and Countryside:

• My favorite hotel in Paris, the Boutique Relais Christine, starts at $882 per night.

• The equally nice and, in some ways, similar Domaine De Rymska in Burgundy is $414 per night.

Island Getaways with Belmond:

• On the rocky and beautiful island of Mallorca, Belmond’s La Residencia costs $1553.

• On the much harder-to-reach Madeira, Belmond’s Reid’s Palace is $634.

Asia with the Iconic Mandarin Oriental:

• Mandarin Oriental in Tokyo is $1202 per night, while Mandarin Oriental in Taipei is $396. If you need a reason to visit Taiwan, please ask me. (Also, outside the main tourism corridor in Japan, prices also decrease significantly.)

Down Under with Safari-Like Experiences: (bear in mind these include meals and experiences, much like an African Safari Lodge.

• The beautiful Lodge at Cape Kidnappers in New Zealand is $3859 per night (converted to USD).

• The remote and stunning Sal Salis in Western Australia is $1292 per night.

These are all top-tier places, and in the top tier, we can observe significant price differentials. However, it also exists in the 3-4 star range, though perhaps not as prominently. This might be the year to embrace a bit more adventure in your travels.

Value in booking international air: 1 Airline Space Manipulation

Welcome to the first installment of a series that aims to unravel the complexities of airline ticket pricing. In this article, we'll delve into the intricate world of fare structures using the example of Malta, a charming island nation that presents an ideal scenario to illustrate a clever booking tactic.

Let's start by demystifying fares. Did you know that for the same flights on the same dates, there can be hundreds of different fares? The governing factor in this intricate dance is the booking code or "class of service" in Air Lingo. In our case, under "C" for business class, the cheapest fares fall under "P," and the second cheapest under "Z."

The priciest, known as "J" fares, rounds up the list. Keep in mind; this is just for business class. When we include Premium Plus and Economy, there are over 250 possible United fares to Malta in August 2024.

Moving on to the practical application, let's consider the United space from Denver to Malta via Frankfurt. UA8879, a codeshare operated by Lufthansa (LH447), offers a fare of approximately $6500 for the outbound journey as only “D” space is available. However, if you opt for UA182 (United-operated for miles), the best fare through United is a higher $8950 as only “C” space is available as we see on the United Website.

YIKES!

Now, an important detail surfaces – some carriers share actual fares. Lufthansa's fares may look similar to United's, but the matching occurs only if both airlines grant equal access to the necessary "classes of service." However, on popular days like a Friday in August, this cooperation may not be in place. The fares will be just as high all booked with Lufthansa as they would all booked as United.

Consider the scenario where the Lufthansa space from Denver to Malta appears unfavorable. However, analyzing the United space from Denver to Frankfurt reveals wide-open business class availability on the United-operated flight. Simultaneously, Lufthansa's space to Malta also shows available.

By strategically manipulating these factors, a fare of $5550 can be achieved, presenting a potential saving of $3500 per ticket. While this tactic doesn't guarantee success every time, it can be advantageous, especially if the airline accepts the booking or waitlists it. For United Premier members seeking maximum value on status, this could be a game-changer.

Understanding, pulling, and manipulating fares is a valuable skill that often goes unnoticed in conventional web searches. This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to adding value in booking international air. Football fan with a definite win and a second one possible.

I’ve got a client that wants to do a Mekong Cruise and he wants to do the best Mekong Cruise. And that is on Lindblad’s Jahan.   That’s the best one, hands down.  Then he has some plans in and around Singapore.
He’s also a United 2K and… a Niners fan.   

He also thinking that there are fair odds that the 49ers will end up in SFO for the Playoffs on January 28th.  He has to be in Seim Reap Cambodia by the 31st.  So, that seems like a heck of a gamble, but it’s not why he’s doing it, it’s a possible fringe benefit. 

The real benefit is SFO airfare prices to Asia.  

Here is the price from Denver about $9105 per person, he isn’t going alone, so that’s  $18210.

And here… is the price from SFO $4743 or $9486… for two, close to HALF as much.

 He will use miles to fly first class between Denver and SFO, but those tickets are just $677 a person.  He’s going to save $8724, but most people would only save $7370.  
Does he have to stay the night in SFO?  No, but he really should. By doing this with two different tickets he has one contract of carriage Denver to SFO and another one SFO to Saigon.   Even if it’s all on United, if he gets delayed out of Denver enough to miss the flight to Asia, he could be looking at a catastrophic problem to still make his cruise, but the 28th, he noted, is the day that the playoffs are.  So, Maybe he will save $8K and see his beloved Niners win the playoffs. 
Now I have to find a spot where he can watch the Superbowl from in Saigon at the end of the Cruise. 

HAHAHA  Wild, hunh?   It’s good to travel with multiple angles of satisfaction!!
